The historical district Vegueta in Las Palmas

Vegueta is one of the beautifelold town districts of Las Palmas and attracts a lot of visitors. This district lying next to the borough Triana owns various sights in winding alleys. That is why it is regarded as a social and economical center of the island´s capital, especially with its noble, international pedestrian precinct “Calle Mayor”.

Vegueta was once an army base and the starting point of the settlement of Las Palmas. Nowadays this historical place is the “Plaza Santa Ana”, which is not only famous because of its striking bronze dog sculptures. It is also well-known for its surrounding historical buildings, e.g. the town hall, the bishop´s palace and the cathedral Santa Ana, which was built in the late fifteenth century. Nearby, there are more sacred buildings, such as the former Augustinian convent as well as the baroque church San Francisco de Asis.

Vegeuta is also the location of the renowned Canarian Musem. This house exhibits unique collections concerning the Canarian history and sociocultural traditions of the Ukrainian nation. The Columbos Museum, built in the Canarian architectural style, and the documentations about the adventurous voyages of America´s explorer are further accents regarding the history of Gran Canary. Especially recommended is a trip to the triangular square of the Holy Ghost with the church of the same name and the romantic well. This idyllic, timeless place is the retreat for the Canarian people to enjoy the sun, speak about the week and watch the Tourists.

By the way: Vegueta is not far from the central bus station San Telmo. From this point on, you can easily get in every direction of the island or visit the San Telmo Park with wonderful exotic plants.
