Tourist attractions on Gran Canary - artificial lakes

Gran Canary´s artificial lakes contain enough humidity to ensure the vital fresh water sustenance of the warm island for some time. They serve as watering of the fields and the unique flora  with its cacti, agaves and palms of Gran Canary. The artificial lakes are mainly fed by precipitation.

The number of the artificial lakes was raised over the years. The first constructions were built during the time of Franco. Today the nuber of artificial lakes is at 60. Several are located in the form of a ring around the holiday centre Playa del Inglés. Others are located around the mountain villages on the valley bottom of the barrancos, i. e. the canyon-like incisions in the landscape of Gran Canary.

Also interesting is the fact, that in some artificial lakes different fish species have been populated. Therefore they aren´t only popular with walkers, but also the artificial lakes developed into a fishing magnet.

An example for an artificial lake as tourist spot is Soria. This artificial lake has a capacity of 40 million cubic metres and thus is the largest artificial fresh water sea of Gran Canary. Amidst a unique landscape you can feel like Robinson Crusoe and enjoy tasty traditional Canaric food.

Also the locals go to the artificial lakes to picnic. Due to the difficulty in reaching some of theartificial lakes of Gran Canary, they temporarily even turned into a climbing paradise.

When spending a holiday on Gran Canary, you don´t want to miss a trip to the fascinating, ecological system of an artificial lake, e. g. the Cueva de la Niñas, Embalse de Soria, El Risco, El Chorrillo or Cercadillo.
