The Gran Canarian peolpe love fairs
Gran Canary is well-known for its inhabitants´ warmth and love of life. Any cause to celebrate will is used as a reason to have a village fête or family celebration for every age group. Besides customs, culinary offers, dances, sport activities and parades, especially the “fiestas” for worshipping patron saints are typical on this island. They follow a religious calendar.
Another important reason for fairs is the time of harvest. According to region the deliverable is presented at parades and markets. There you can often see beautiful traditional costumes as well as lively Canarian folk dances. It has to be mentioned that this tradition should not be understood as a show, but as a saved and vivid cultural asset. Furthermore, the island is also well-known for its South American influenced carnival as well as international meetings regarding movies, theatres, dances and music.
One of the most important fairs is the arrival of the three Wise Men at the beginning of the year. Between January and March there is the almond tree festival and carnival. In March and April the Canarians celebrate the Easter procession. In May and June street rugs of blossoms and colored sand enchant visitors on the occasion of “Corpus Christi”. Huge fireworks can be seen during the “Fiesta de San Juan” starting at the end of June. In August the traditional festival of branches follows. It is based on ancient rain rituals of the native population. In September the “Fiesta de la Virgen del Pino”, an important religious festival, takes place. Following this, there are sports contests, such as wrestling and stick beating in November. And finally, the Christmas season closes the year with its typical Christmas fair.
