Gran Canary - Moya "Villa Verde"
Culture, history and nature are combined in Moya, which is western of the capital Las Palmas. A three-aisled, twin-towered, neo-romanesque church and a museum for the littérateur Tomás Morales can be found in the centre of the city, that is framed by beautiful green laurels. Therefore the locals are calling Moya the green city, "la villa verde".
The green surrounding might be a reason for the inspirational handicraft, that Moya is famous for not only on the Canary Islands, but in entire Spain. Besides the handcrafted products made of wood, leather and metal also embroidered traditional costumes and even musical instruments are made. Beyond that Moya is considered the commercial entre for essential oils and unique soaps.
The city is located on an impressive plateau at a height of 500 m, therefore lying protected and inspired the canaric natives, the Guanches, to settle down here long time ago. The imposing archeological sites la Montaneta and Cueva de Doramas close to Moya are testifying this.
You should certainly take some time to try the delicious confectionaries by the creative bakers of the city. Specialties of the bakers, e.g. are the lemon chelsea buns called suspiros, the sugar-glazed angel cake called bizcochos lustrados and tasty anise cookies. Sundays are perfect for savouring these tasteful delights because that´s when a market takes place in Moya, but you can also use them as a provision for your hiking trip along unique dragon trees, laurels and coolibah trees through the Barranco del Laurel.
