Volcanic crater Caldera de Bandama

A firespitting volcano is an unique evidence of natures massive powers. Especially the eruption processes, due to which Gran Canary grew out of the Atlantic Ocean, show the unimaginable forces of nature. Caldera de Bandama is a crater almost 200m deep with a diameter of around 1 kilometer is just one piece of eveidence for these eruption processes creating the island of Gran Canary.

Today, one can observe the gigantic crater from the peak of the Bandama (about 500m high). You can reach the peak by a walk or simply drive up to it with your car. A beautiful serpentine road leads up to the viewpoint, leading through vineyards along the way.

Once arrived, you will have an unforgettable view over the lava landscape. Those who have nerves can climb down to the ground of the crater. Down there you will find to your surprise a former ranch house surrounded by citrus trees, succulents and palm trees. Originally the whole inside of the crater was cultivated with terraced fields. The dutch Daniel van Dame successfully ran a vinery here during the 70s.

You will definetely keep in memory the contrast between the rock outside and the green inside the crater, the panoramic view on the east and north coast of Gran Canary and the view to the neighbour island of Fuerteventura. If you will, playing a round of golf there is possible. Here, at the southern slope of the Caldera, you find Spains oldest golf club - the Real Club de Golf de Las Palmas de Gran Canary.
